Resveratrol is a type of polyphenol that can be found naturally in a variety of sources including grapes, Japanese knotweed (giant knotweed), berries, peanuts, dark chocolate and tea.

The French Paradox: Resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, first gained publicity in the early nineties when the CBS television show, 60-Minutes, investigated why people living in France, despite eating diets high in saturated fats, had lower rates of coronary heart disease than people living in the United States. The report concluded that a higher consumption of red wine may play a role in lowering coronary heart disease. Since then, research has pointed to resveratrol, a substance contained in grape skins and many other plants, as the compound with the possibility of preventing or delaying coronary heart disease, in addition to various other health benefits.
Trans-Resveratrol boasts a long list of benefits including cardiovascular health, anti-inflammatory properties, the prevention of joint disease, the ability to lower blood sugar levels, improved athletic endurance, and even the possibility of preventing and eliminating certain types of cancers.

Research by the Harvard Medical School has found that trans-resveratrol increases the production of a protein called SIRT1, which may increase the human lifespan.

By increasing blood flow, resveratrol may protect not only the heart and arteries, but also the brain. Recent studies in the United Kingdom suggest that resveratrol may help prevent or reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. [Source: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition].

A study by the University of South Florida suggests that resveratrol may not only prevent, but might even reverse the dangerous build-up of fat in the liver caused by alcohol abuse.
Pure resveratrol refers to a product that contains only pure trans-resveratrol, the beneficial substance in resveratrol. Pure resveratrol (obtained from knotweed) is white and has almost no odor or taste as compared to low purity products that are darker in color and have a distinctive odor and taste. Hundreds of resveratrol products are sold in the USA, however only a few contain pure trans-resveratrol.
Various studies by both the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and Harvard University in Boston, have found that a calorie restriction diet (CR) improves health and slows the aging process in animals and humans due to limiting dietary intake.

Previous research has confirmed that calorie restriction combined with exercise may increase maximum lifespan and protect against many chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer.

According to a Harvard University study, resveratrol has similar effects to a calorie restriction (CR) diet and may be used as a substitute to supplement a low calorie diet and exercise regimen. The implication of this is that while on a resveratrol regimen, an over weight individual, without losing weight, may be considered as a "healthy obese" person. According to the study, mice that were fed a high fat diet along with resveratrol performed better on a treadmill and lived longer than the thin mice that were fed a low calorie/low fat diet and no resveratrol. When it comes to maintaining optimal health, resveratrol may offer even better protection than taking aspirin. It is generally believed that high cholesterol is the main cause of heart disease. However, based on thousands of heart surgeries, many cardiologists believe that a large number of heart attacks are not caused by high cholesterol, but rather, they are the result of inflammation. Different foods may cause different levels of inflammation in our body, and even one meal can cause an instant heart attack. Resveratrol's anti-inflammatory and blood thinning properties may prevent blood clotting and increase blood flow, both of which may decrease or even prevent heart attacks. One way to improve athletic endurance is through exercise. According to Johan Auwerx, from the Institute of Genetics, Molecular and Cell Biology in Illkirch, France, "Resveratrol boosts muscle endurance by increasing the energy-producing components within muscle cells". Auwerx says that "high-doses of trans-resveratrol are needed to trigger the pathway that gives cells more mitochondria. He goes on to say that, "at very low doses you don't activate the cell machinery to burn energy," thereby discounting the belief that, "one glass of wine might improve athletic prowess". The effects of resveratrol are so pronounced that endurance athletes may one day take it as a performance enhancer. [Source igbmc].

Trans-resveratrol in sufficient dosage improves athletic performance and benefits everyone by making any physical activity become much easier. For example, individuals who have difficulty walking up flights of stairs are able to do so with much less effort when they take resveratrol.
No, but you will be able to achieve almost the same cardio-vascular benefits as if you were on a low calorie diet and an exercise regimen. Anyone who claims you can lose weight simply by using resveratrol is misleading you.
Both trans-resveratrol and cis-resveratrol are found naturally in resveratrol, however Trans-Resveratrol is the beneficial health substance in resveratrol products but Cis-resveratrol has no health benefits. High purity resveratrol contains higher amounts of trans-resveratrol, while lower purity products contain higher amount of CIS-resveratrol and lower amounts of trans-resveratrol.
Resveratrol-99 contains 99 percent of pure trans-resveratrol, the beneficial substance of resveratrol, while resveratrol-50 contains only 50 percent of trans-resveratrol. The other 50 percent contain ingredients that are a natural part of the plant but which have no health benefits. These ingredients include cis-resveratrol and natural emodin, which may act as a laxative in some sensitive individuals.

These ingredients account for the darker color and stronger odor of resveratrol- 50, as compared to resveratrol-99, which is white, has no odor, and has no side effects. Due to the purification process, resveratrol 50% typically costs about 30-40 percent less than resveratrol 99%.
Buying resveratrol may be a confusing task. Resveratrol is a general name for a product that is available in various purities, for example 5%, 10%, 20%, 50%, or 99%. Resveratrol provides no health benefits unless it contains trans-resveratrol. Prior to purchasing any resveratrol product, it is important to find out the purity content. If the manufacturer does not list this on the "Supplement Fact" label, or the label does not include purity specification, then there is no way of knowing the amount of trans-resveratrol in the product, what other substances are included, and if, in fact, what you buy has any health benefits at all.

Low purity resveratrol products contain low amount of trans-resveratrol and high amount of cis-resveratrol, emodin and other parts of the plant which provide no health benefits. .

Price comparisons can only be done if companies clearly list all of the ingredients on the "Supplement Facts" label, including the percentage of trans-resveratrol. Consumers can then assess the "price-per-gram"of beneficial resveratrol by comparing the amount of trans-resveratrol per capsule, (not per serving size).

Resveratrol is found in various sources including grapes, Japanese knotweed, peanuts and some berries. The assumption that resveratrol obtained from grapes is "superior" to any other resveratrol source is a total myth.

This wrong assumption originated from a report known as the "French Paradox", that low coronary disease in France may be the result of wine consumption. It wasn't the wine or the grapes the researches were looking into, they emphasized on the resveratrol substance contained in the wine.
In fact, since the availability of pure of trans-resveratrol obtained from grapes does not exceed more than 5-8% trans-resveratrol, the "Harvard Study" researches used pure trans-resveratrol obtained from Japanese knotweed, which provides almost 100% pure trans-resveratrol.

Most resveratrol products sold in the USA and abroad are obtained from Japanese knotweed (its association with Japan is just in the name). Compared to grapes or other sources, Japanese knotweed contains the highest concentration of resveratrol, which makes it more economical to purify. The cost of grape resveratrol in purity of 5% is almost the same as knotweed resveratrol in purity of 99%.

Compared to knotweed, grape resveratrol is expensive to produce. Japanese  knotweed grows in the wild, while grapes do not. Knotweed has higher concentration of trans-resveratrol and can be stored at room temperature, while grapes need to be kept frozen. It takes about 250 kg of grape skins to produce 1 kg of grape resveratrol in a purity of 5%.

Unlike low purity knotweed resveratrol, consuming grape resveratrol is the same as eating grapes, which contain no emodin, and therefore even low purity grape resveratrol does not cause any side effects. High purity trans-resveratrol obtained from knotweed does not contain emodin either, and does not cause side effects.

Beware! Some companies that manufacture dietary supplements add a trace amount of grape resveratrol  and then market the product as "red wine resveratrol" or "grape resvertarol". B
elow is one example of many similar products sold in the USA and abroad.

With a powerful statement such as  "Maximum Strength" and a colorful picture of grapes on the front of the bottle, this product seems to be the "perfect" product, which would fool just about anyone. But if we take a good look at the "Supplement Facts" label on the back, it is in total contradiction to the front.  The main ingredient in this product is low purity Japanese knotweed which is mixed with a few milligrams of grape resveratrol. Despite its low purity, it is described as
"Maximum Strength".
While this practice is legal, many companies use this method of marketing to take advantage of the consumers. Unfortunately most consumers do not read labels carefully and they end up with a product which is far off from what they lead to believe they were getting.

The bottom line: Resveratrol is resveratrol regardless of its source just as Vitamin C is Vitamin C, whether it is obtained from oranges, red peppers or broccoli. The source of resveratrol is not important. What is important is the amount of trans-resveratrol contained in the product.

Resveratrol has been used for many years and no safety issues have ever been reported. During the last few years, a number of clinical tests confirm that taking pure trans-resveratrol in dosages of up to 6,000 mg daily is safe and does not cause any side effects. A lower purity resveratrol may cause some side effects to sensitive individuals due to the content of emodin.

There is no recommended daily dosage of resveratrol. However, a daily dosage of 250-1000 mg (trans-resveratrol) is sufficient to provide cardiovascular protection, improve athletic endurance   and continued general health maintenance.

If trans-resveratrol is being taken with the objective to address certain conditions such as cardiovascular disease, joint disease, cancer tumors, high blood sugar, high liver enzymes, or high alcohol intake, higher dosages are typically indicated.

The dosage used in the "Harvard Study" was equal to 23 mg per kg or about 500 mg per 50 pounds of body weight. For example: A person that weighs 150 pounds would take 1500 mg daily. This is just a suggestion based on the "Harvard Study", not a rule. Consult your health-care provider before taking resveratrol or any dietary supplement.
