Resveratrol is a general name for a product that is available in various purities, for example 5%, 10%, 20%, 50%, or 99%. Resveratrol provides no health benefits unless it contains trans-resveratrol.
Prior to purchasing any resveratrol product, it is important to find out the purity content. If the manufacturer does not list this on the "Supplement Fact" label, or the label does not include purity specification, then there is no way of knowing the amount of trans-resveratrol in the product, and if, in fact, what you buy has any health benefits at all.
What is Pure Resveratrol?
"Pure" Resveratrol refers to a product that contains only trans-resveratrol, the beneficial substance in resveratrol. Low purity resveratrol may cost less, but chances are that the amount of trans-resveratrol will be much smaller and there will be higher amounts of other substances which have no health benefits (i.e. CIS resveratrol, emodin). Trans-resveratrol is the only beneficial substance in resveratrol.
The FDA requires that all dietary supplements and vitamins include a "Supplement Facts" label including all of the ingredients in the product, the recommended dosage and the serving size per container. However the FDA does not always regulate the purity content of health food supplements. Not surprisingly, manufacturers that offer low-purity resveratrol do not disclose the purity content of the product. Instead, they use misleading descriptions such as "Extra Strength", "Super Potency", "High Purity" and "Mega Potency" when marketing their products. Remember, if the label does not clearly indicate the amount of trans-resveratrol (or its purity content), then there is no guarantee of what the product contains, or if it even has any health benefits.
It is important to note that 250-500 mg of trans-resveratrol is the minimum daily amount that is needed to promote the health benefits of this product. Low-priced products typically have "low purity", with questionable health benefits.
Most resveratrol sold in the USA and abroad is obtained from Japanese knotweed (polygonum cuspidatum), which its association with Japan is just in the name. Japanese knotweed (also known as Giant knotweed) is a weed that grows wild in many parts of the world, including North America, Europe, and Eastern Asia. Knotweed contains the highest concentration of resveratrol and is the most economical to produce.
Japanese knotweed resveratrol is available in various purities ranging from 5% to 99%. In order to obtain 500 mg of pure trans-resveratrol, depending on the purity amount and the capsule/serving size, consumers may find themselves needing to take over 20-25 capsules per day, when using low purity products, or 1-500 mg capsule of pure trans-resveratrol. The price of pure trans-resveratrol may seem high, but consumers who opt to buy a less expensive, may find themselves paying the same or even more money in order to be able to get an equal content of trans-resvertarol. Additionally, unlike pure resveratrol, the lower the purity, the greater the emodin content and the risk of possible side effects, (which may include upset stomach and diarrhea). Pure trans-resveratrol, obtained from Japanese knotweed, is white in color while low purity products are darker in color (brown-olive).
Resveratrol made of grapes is NOT superior to resveratrol made of Japanese knotweed, this is just a myth. Although grape resveratrol does not cause any side effects (even in low purity) it's usually available in purities of up to 5%-8% trans-resveratrol compared to knotweed which is available in up to 100% purity. Due to the low concentration of trans-resveratrol and the high price of producing grape resverarol, its not economical and therefore not widley availble if at all. Pure trans-resveratrol (99%) made of knotweed does not contain emodin and does not cause any side effects and provides all the benefits at economical price.
Beware of products that are labeled "made WITH grape resveratrol". Most of those products are worthless. Usually, a minuscule amount (a few milligrams) of lowest purity grape resveratrol are added to a low purity knotweed resveratrol, a product which is low in price but also in effectiveness. Again, it's another marketing gimmick to intentionally mislead consumers for the sole purpose of monetary gain while the product has no health benefit. Another product that may be confused with grape resveratrol (or resveratrol), is grape-seed, which does not contain resveratrol.
It's clear that the source of resveratrol is not what matters, what is important is knowing the purity of the product you are purchasing. We can compare it to buying other vitamins or supplements; for example, nobody questions the source of Vitamin C that can be obtained from a variety of sources including oranges, peppers and broccoli. The very same principle applies when a smart consumer is purchasing resveratrol. Remember, it's the amount of trans-resveratrol that counts, not the source of the product.
Another important piece of advice? Stay away from companies that offer "Free-Trials". These offers are usually a scam. Nobody wants to be caught in the all-too-familiar situation where a worthless product is delivered, something the savvy customer quickly realizes, only to find out that not only is the company sending this product with no proven value on a monthly basis, but also, that monthly charges appear on the credit card statement. It can take months and hours of wasted time before this problem is resolved.
